Building a team

So I'd like to get into competitive battling and I was wondering how I should start building a team. I get IV's and EV's, so building a team would be my first step. Thanks for any help :D

First, you have to decide if you want Offense, Bulky Offense, Suicide Offense, Stall, Bulky Defense, Baton Pass, etc. What kind of team do you want?

You have two options to go to next when team building:

1. Pick a core. Generally a set up sweeper of some sort, but sometimes a Choice user.

2. Pick a goal. Pick a goal of some sort that your team is trying to achieve, like prevent your opponent from making use of his/her turns by paralyzing/confusing/flinching everything. Or something like that.

Pick one of those two, now you either have a Pokemon to start with or a strategy you want to employ. For the branching of Step 1, read this, if you start with step 2, read on:

1.1. Make a list of things that could prevent a sweep from your core. For example, Scizor is countered by Zapdos and Gyarados well, so add them to the list.

1.2.1. Find what can beat those counters and use them to defeat them, keeping in mind overall synergy in the team. By synergy I mean how well things work with eachother. For example, Tyranitar deals well with Zapdos, but doesn't take Fighting attacks well and can lose to Scizor. Physical Azelf works well with T-tar by being able to Survive a Scizor Bullet Punch and OHKO with Fire Punch.

1.2.2. Find out what other Pokes are countered by the same guys and use them so the opponent overtaxes those counters allowing a sweep.

From branch two:

2.1. Find out what guys can allow you to achieve your plan. In a Paralysis team it would be guys than can Paralyze and abuse it via Confusion or Flinch.

2.2. Find out how you can build a team with synergy that will achieve this goal without being swept by any 1 threat.

Basically, synergy is the GOLDEN RULE.

It's severely over-rated. It gives you the type chart, which is good to keep in mind but shouldn't be the end all be all of team building.

Nah, i dont think he is talking about team building. I think he means that when you decide on your first 6 team members, then you go on marriland, find your weakness's, then go from there.
