| There's literally like 3 black people on this whole forum, so Rock/Metal will win. And yeah, I love Rise Against, great band. However my favorite band is most likely Disturbed or Linkin Park. | |

| Hmm, you should make a electronic/house vote.
Well, that's my favourite kind of music, but it's normally just solo artists or collaborations, so it isn't really a band.

| Never did get into Metal much....
The heaviest stuff I ever listened to and genuinely enjoyed was stuff like Led Zeppelin (which is more like Blues-Rock), Queens of The Stone Age, and Grunge music (particularly Soundgarden)
I listen to a lot of Rock and Pop and the only Hip Hop I ever listen to is Outkast cause after hearing "Hey Ya!" I have put them under my list of "Artists I LOVE" (Then again they are sorta more Funk if anything else).
My favorite Band ever is The Who and I really love Pete Townshend............seriously if I ever became gay he'd probably be the reason (him or Shigeru Miyamoto and not cause of looks cause of what they do.....it like gives me a broner as my friends say haha). I'm also very fond of Green Day.

It's general I guess. If yah like Green Day (which I do) I'd put Rock since that is generally what they are. As for Ska I'd put that under Rock too I guess. Most of the people here seem to like modern rock and metal so stuff like ska wouldn't exactly be prevalent here (although I do share your love of Operation Ivy! Do yah like Rancid?).

| No, that's bull. If you knew anything about Green Day's roots, you'd put them under punk. Them and NOFX and AFI and Operation Ivy all came from the same Berkely scene ceneterd around the punk club 924 Gilman Street. Here's an idea: Don't listen to American Idiot and listen to something good like Kerplunk or Dookie. Then, it'll come to you.
Yah, you clearly don't understand squat about Punk or Ska.

Yah, you clearly don't understand squat about Punk or Ska. First of all don't tell me what I do and don't know about Green Day. I own all of their albums on CD, I read one of their Biographies and recently bought Green Day: Rock Band. Second I know plenty about Ska and Punk, I own a few Bob Marley, Operation Ivy, Rancid, Reel Big Fish, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Husker Du, and Replacements albums (although the last two could be considered Alternative Rock). I grew up with Green Day and first heard Nimrod when I was 4 because my dad had brought it home and it is the very first record I had ever listened to in its entirety. Third I liked American Idiot and even 21st century Breakdown (especially 21st Century Breakdown) and consider both of those a mash up of Punk and Alternative. Finally you clearly don't understand the term "general". Out of all the genres he listed which do you think Punk, Blues, Folk, Ska, Alternative, Garage, Grunge, Post-Rock/Punk/Grunge, New Wave etc....would fall under? I'll give you a hint, it's the first one. It would be really annoying for that guy to list every single genre in the world individually so he generalized it. There was no need to go hostile on me at all and call me out dude. And judging by your taste I'd say your a Punk traditionalist huh?

| Yeah, I'm pretty hardcore. And I didn't mean to go hostile on you, It's just I'm into the whole DIY scene (well, kinda not really). But there is a difference between rock and punk, and with the categories and subcategories given, they should include Punk. I mean for gods sake the guy included HipHop AND Rap. :) Hey, I see you as a friend on the forum, I didn't mean to start a flame war. We seem to pretty much populate this forum anyway, and have similar interests. Try not to take me too seriously. And no, Green Day isn't straight punk, they're pop punk. And yes, from Warning on, they were more rock than punk. I get defensive because I used to love green day, but moved onto more hardcore stuff, because quite frankly, they well, sold out. And from the biographies and the two live shows I've been to, plus the Albums I listened too, they were not too quite about it. I used to lurk on AbsolutePunk too. Filled to the brim with Maroon 5 and stupid Miley Cyrus, yeah. Had to leave because I'm a punk, In the minority. Man, It's like that girl from SLC punk said. Anarchy isn't a product, it's a state of being. So is punk, man. It seems you understand Green Day's Music quite well, but it seems you fail to understand the Punk Culture. Have you read 924 Gilman Street? That book changed my view on Green Day. It's like ten bucks, I'll buy you a copy if you want. That's why Jesse Michaels is my favorite artist. He never stopped making the music he loved. Ever since Green Day's first show as Green Day in 1989 and Operation Ivy's last show (which was actually the same show, what I wouldn't give to travel back in time to get there lol) the two artists have gone different ways. And while I like some of the bands you listen to, I detest Reel Big Fish. They are NOT Punk: This is the end all be all of Reel Big Fish, done by the lovely Choking Victim. This is the end all be all of Reel Big Fish, done by the lovely Choking Victim. RISC Forever!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiBYdCzMT_I I could only very lightly call myself a fan of punk. I like Green Day cause I grew up with them. they are what got me into music and I can never stop liking them even if I tried. If I had picked up on them when I was a little older I probably would listen to one or two tracks and be done with them and never look twice cause in all honesty I'm not to crazy about punk. The most modern punk I can think of that I like aside from Green Day is Rancid and sometimes I can't even listen to them and the same goes for Operation Ivy, Sex Pistols, Ramones, and The Clash. Punk is one of those genres I have to be in the mood for with the sole exception being Green Day cause they have the all important pop sound that I love cause I do genuinely like Pop. well to be more precise "obscure pop" not mainstream crap. stuff like Baroque, jangle, psychedelic, power pop, etc.... The most hardcore bands I believe I have in my library are Rancid and OpIvy and to be honest i'm pretty averted to hardcore just cause I don't really like hardcore anything I got into them because they were somewhat associated with Green Day and I thought what the hey if Green Day likes them maybe I will and I did. I also consider you a friend on this forum. you seem to have a closer taste of music and video games to me than anyone else who seems to almost exclusively like RPG's and Metal. All is forgiven I hope. as for punk not being up there well it's not the most mainstream genre in the world to be honest. green Day's Dookie is the only punk record in the US to ever go Diamond and every other one besides a few were lucky to even make platinum. and if he included punk then he would have to include Alternative Rock and if he included that then he would have to include Alternative Metal, then grunge, then techno, then house, then electronica, then Post music, etc...so I guess he just saved himself the trouble of being too specific. Green Day to me is early on Pop Punk with some straight up normal Punk Rock (insomniac) and even some folk punk (Warning) after that they seemed to go back and fourth with punk, rock ,and alternative with singles like American idiot, Holiday, and Wake Me Up When September Ends. I made up a genre for American Idiot and 21st century Breakdown. I call them ballistic Punk cause it just sounds bombastic to me. I never claim to know the punk culture and I use the term culture a bit reluctantly cause well....unless their is a village somehwere where a bunch of dudes with green mohawks and dikes with with buzz cuts and purple hair sit around a fire and smoke the ceremonial marijuana then I find it hard to call them a culture...maybe a subculture. I could never be punk. I like to think I'm well spoken and polite and don't really take that many chances. i have a few problems with authority, I've taken a few hits , and I sometimes do stuff I'm not all that proud of, but really that just means I'm a stereotypical teenager than a punk but, maybe I'm missing the point. Being punk to me is just doing what you feel like doing and screw anyone who says otherwise whether it's something as jacked up as murder or something as simple as saying "i'm staying up past my bed time!". what right do I have to say that someone isn't punk? honestly I just think its to complicated for em to get into. and for the record no I would not be interested in that book I already have a book on the history of punk music that I had to buy for a social studies fair project and I already know everything I care to know about gilman street. I'm not crazy about Reel Big Fish either but I do have the album with the song "trendy" cause that songs is just fun to me and my friends. If i ever started a band it wouldn't be a punk band that's for sure. It'd be more like a Garage Rock/Baroque Pop band that alternates between the two genres. sort of like a mesh of The Strokes and arcade Fire (who both made my top 2 favorite albums ever). My favorite band ever like i said above will always be The Who and their good ol' genuine Rock and occasional Art Rock and RnB. ................we leave pretty long posts......especially me........I kinda wish I didn't haha......ha | |
